A classic New Years Eve fell race
A classic New Years Eve fell race starting from the quarry bottom on Penistone Hill, with runners usually setting off to the sound of a Bag Piper playing. Then 6.7 miles, with 1000 feet of ascent and descent, usually involving mud, bogs and a stream to cross. Many runners get in the festive spirit by running in fancy dress. Sponsored by Daleside Brewery. Each runner receives a bottle of Daleside Old Legover when they collect their number. Time: The race will start in the quarry bottom at 11.30am. Please arrive in good time to pick up your number from the race registration, ideally before 11:00am. Fancy Dress runners should assemble outside the cricket hut at 11.10 for photos and judging. FRA Rules: The event is run under FRA rules. Runners must read the principles of fell running and the requirements for runners. Kit List: Please bring with you all the FRA Mandatory Minimum Kit List detailed in the requirements for runners on the day. This includes waterproof whole body cover (with taped seams and integrated attached hood), hat, gloves and whistle. There may be random kit checks on the day. Course: Starting from the quarry bottom on Penistone, the route heads out along the Bronte Way then just past the ruins of Middle Intake Farm it turns right down the hillside to cross the beck. Its then up the inevitably muddy climb to reach the track continuing from Back Lane. Turn left, uphill on a good track, past Upper Heights farm and continuing on to the ruins of Top Withins. Go past and round to find the footpath that then leads to the summit of Delf Hill and the trig point. Here turn sharp right and begin to descend crossing some swampy ground to re-join the outward path by a small stone bridge. Now retrace the route back towards to the start. Just after you pass Middle Intake farm, bear right off the track and onto the path, to take the shortest way back to the finish line on the cricket pitch.
